A common discussion among men with a dark sense of humor is what situation they’d kill themselves in and how they’d go about doing it. The boring answer is shooting yourself in the head when you reach an intolerable stage of a degenerative illness. The more imaginative answer is to blow your life savings on a drug-fueled orgy, culminating in an overdose in order to avoid going into a retirement home.
Years ago a Redditor posted repeatedly about his experience traveling to Tijuana, Mexico with the intention of killing himself. He spent a week of debauchery, doing cocaine and sleeping with prostitutes before deciding life was worth living after all. He has funny comments, such as that he focuses on the discovering life is worth living part when he talks about the experience with church groups and about the wild sex and drugs when talking about it at bars.
This work, which would probably be considered realistic fiction, is about a man who is on a similar journey: he’s decided to kill himself and has an elaborate final adventure. The narrative would examine his life and how he’s gotten to the point that it doesn’t feel worth continueing. Interwoven with that would be debauchery in a developing country.
This is the sort of work that would be best written by someone who had actually lived such a thing, otherwise you’d probably want to do extensive research to get the details right as much as possible.
